Havana, Jan 10 (AIN) Syrian
President Bachar al Assad held talks in Damascus on Monday with
Cuban Vice President Jose Ramon Fernandez.
The Cuban official offered the
Syrian Head of State fraternal greetings on behalf of Cuban
President Fidel Castro and reiterated his official invitation to
visit the Caribbean island. The invitation was made by
President Castro during a visit to Damascus in May 2001.
President al Assad expressed his
wish to pay a visit to the island as soon as possible and sent his
most cordial greetings to the Cuban people and their
president.
During official talks held at the
Al Rawda Palace, the Syrian Head of State and the Cuban vice
president addressed several international issues as well as the
current relations and cooperation between the two
countries.
Al Assad reaffirmed his country's
friendship and solidarity with the Cuban Revolution and its
political will to further strengthen relations with the island in
all fields.
Jose Ramon Fernandez further
conveyed Cuba's support for the cause of Arab nations, particularly
for the struggle being waged by the Palestinian people and the Iraqi
resistance against foreign military occupation.
During the talks held in a
environment of cordiality, both countries reaffirmed their common
interest in working for security, peace, and social and economic
progress on the basis of respect for the principles of international
