Worldwide Demand for Release of Cuban Five.

Havana, Sep 2 (AIN) Prestigious artists, scientists, journalists and political activists around the world keep on adding their signatures to the Open Letter to the US Attorney General demanding the immediate release of the Cuban Five still unfairly confined in US penitentiaries.

Over 2,000 signers have joined the call by this Friday including six Nobel laureates and 140 US intellectuals such as the philosophers and professors Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn, and outstanding novelists Alice Walker and Russel Banks. Equally, Alfonso Sastre, Rosa Regas, Belen Gopegui and Juan Madrid, and other renowned writers are among the 140 Spanish signers backing up the cause of the Cuban Five.

Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and Thiago de Mello, US artist Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte as well as Latin American authors Mario Benedetti, Eduardo Galeano and Jorge Enrique Adoum have also penned the document.

Cuban dancer Alicia Alonso and troubadours Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanes and Vicente Feliu head the extensive list of Cuban intellectuals who have signed the letter demanding the immediate release of the five anti-terrorist fighters unjustly kept in prison in the US since 1998.

The Open Letter, published for the first time last Tuesday in Havana, is being sponsored by the web site 'In Defense of Humanity', a recent project promoted by Cuban jurists which focuses on the censure of injustice around the world.

This document, which is receiving growing press coverage including in the US mass media, is currently available at the website http://www.liberenlos5.cult.cu/ for those wanting to join the effort.
