(AIN) Prestigious artists, scientists, journalists
and political activists around the world keep on
adding their signatures to the Open Letter to the
US Attorney General demanding the immediate
release of the Cuban Five still unfairly confined
in US penitentiaries.
Over 2,000 signers have joined the call by this
Friday including six Nobel laureates and 140 US
intellectuals such as the philosophers and
professors Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn, and
outstanding novelists Alice Walker and Russel
Banks. Equally, Alfonso Sastre, Rosa Regas, Belen
Gopegui and Juan Madrid, and other renowned
writers are among the 140 Spanish signers backing
up the cause of the Cuban Five.
Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and Thiago de
Mello, US artist Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte
as well as Latin American authors Mario Benedetti,
Eduardo Galeano and Jorge Enrique Adoum have also
penned the document.
Cuban dancer Alicia Alonso and troubadours Silvio
Rodríguez, Pablo Milanes and Vicente Feliu head
the extensive list of Cuban intellectuals who have
signed the letter demanding the immediate release
of the five anti-terrorist fighters unjustly kept
in prison in the US since 1998.
The Open Letter, published for the first time last
Tuesday in Havana, is being sponsored by the web
site 'In Defense of Humanity', a recent project
promoted by Cuban jurists which focuses on the
censure of injustice around the world.
This document, which is receiving growing press
coverage including in the US mass media, is
currently available at the website
